Born in Mairi, a small town in the interior of Bahia, Brazil where there are no movie theaters to this day, Muritiba was already an adult when he first plunged into the darkness of a theater to watch a movie. The son of a truck driver and a housewife, the filmmaker studied History in São Paulo, and later moved to Curitiba, where, without finding a job, he applied for a job in the State Justice System, where he worked as a jailer for seven years. While still working as a jailer, Muritiba learned that he could have his working hours in the public service credited if he was enrolled in some college course. He then went to study Cinema and, between one class and another, decided to merge the two worlds through which he passed: that of jail and that of the art of filmmaking. This is how his Prison Trilogy was born, made up of two short films and a documentary feature, projects that served as a release from prison life and the gateway to his cinematographic career.

With stints at Sundance ("Rust," 2018), Venice ("Tarantula," 2015, "Private Desert" 2021) San Sebastian ("To My Dead Beloved," 2015, "Rust," 2018) and Cannes - Critics Week (“Pátio”, 2013), os filmes escritos e dirigidos por Aly Muritiba já conquistaram mais de 200 prêmios em festivais de cinema. Para canais de TV e streaming, Muritiba dirigiu as séries “O Hipnotizador” – S02 (HBO), “Carcereiros” S02 (Globo), “Irmãos Freitas” (Turner), “Irmandade” (Netflix), “O Caso Evandro” (Globoplay), “Cangaço Novo”(Amazon Prime) e Cidade de Deus: A Luta Não Para (HBO Max).

In 2013 his short film "The Factory" was on the Oscar shortlist. OscarIn 2021, in addition to directing "The Evandro Case," the true crime series nominated for International Emmy AwardsAly released the feature films "Jesus Kid", (best direction and screenplay in the Festival de Gramado) e “Deserto Particular” (prêmio de público no Festival de Veneza e representante brasileiro na corrida do Oscar de 2022). Em 2022 dirigu seu sétimo longa-metragem “Barba Ensopada de Sangue” uma adaptação do livro de Daniel Galera. Em 2024, dirigiu “Funk”, filme selecionado no 2026 Tribeca Festival. Em 2025, dirigiu “America” uma coprodução Brasil-EUA filmada na cidade de Los Angeles. O seu mais recente longa-metragem “Nova Éden”, 2025, chega em breve nos cinemas.
